Vorgestern rief mich der Moderator eines Radiosenders an - er wollte mich zur Casting-Show Germany’s Next Topmodel befragen, deren 3. Staffel gerade ausgestrahlt wird. Und tatsächlich habe ich mich darauf eingelassen.

Obwohl das Thema nicht ganz einfach ist. Persönlich finde ich die Show äußerst kurzweilig - vom professionellen Standpunkt aus gesehen ist sie aber schwierig. Die Branche funktioniert nach ihren eigenen, und vor allem, internationalen Gesetzen. Ein Typ wie Lena Gercke, also blond, sympathisch, glatt, mag bei deutschen Fernsehzuschauern gut ankommen – auf den internationalen Laufstegen ist doch eher der androgyne, kantige Typ gefragt. Wenn man den Zuschauern einige Topmodels von den Laufstegen präsentieren würde, würden sie wahrscheinlich kein einziges hübsch oder attraktiv finden.

Aber ich will nicht sagen, dass eine internationale Karriere im Anschluss an eine solche Casting-Show ausgeschlossen wäre - es passiert nur sehr selten. Eines der wenigen Models, die nach einer solchen Fernsehshow eine Topmodelkarriere begonnen haben, ist die Finnin Suvi Koponen. Sie läuft derzeit für alle namhaften Designer in Mailand, Paris und New York, macht Kampagnen (z. B. für Balenciaga) und Cover (z. B. VOGUE).
Was Deutschland betrifft: Die Karriere von Lena Gercke ist eher auf Deutschland beschränkt, Barbara Meier scheint mir international etwas erfolgversprechender anzulaufen. Und das ist ja die Definition eines Topmodels: international für renommierte Fashion-Labels zu modeln.
